Dating back to ancient times was a prominent keyboard instrument during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It produced sound by plucking the strings with a mechanism controlled by keys.
Though it had a beautiful and distinctive sound, the harpsichord lacked expressive capabilities. Its volume and tone remained constant regardless of the touch or force applied to the keys, limiting the musician's ability to convey emotions through variations in dynamics.
